CHAPTER 12
Eagle was confused. TJ couldnât be suggesting that he and Nautical were mates, but somehow that was exactly what he was thinking, and Eagle knew it, but he had to be wrong. If Naut was his mate, one of them would have gone through the dragon heat.
They hadnât.
Then again Gio, being a multiplex elemental was able to use water to keep his body cool enough so he didnât die from the high temperatures of dragon heat⦠and his dragon was a water dragon⦠maybe⦠Turning to look at his dragon, he asked, âAre water dragons able to keep dragon heat at bay for their mates?â
Shaking his head, his dragon answered, âNo. Remember when Talpa went into the heat? He almost died and he is a water dragon as well.â
Turning back around, Eagle continued to stare out the window, thinking, Okay, then there is no way Naut and I could be mates.
âEagle?â
TJâs soft voice had him dropping his forehead to the cool glass. He had no idea what to do. His ability to not connect with people was seriously affecting him and he damn-well knew it. Yet, he had no clue what to do about it.
So far, it had cost him his lover⦠his love, because Eagle could fight it as much as he wanted to, but he knew in his heart that he loved Nautical. He knew the signs⦠he just didnât want to see them⦠to feel them, because when he did and it failed, his heart was going to be ripped to shreds, and this time if it happened, Eagle knew heâd never recover.
âEagle?â TJ softly called out to him again.
There was no way Eagle could look at his dragon or TJ when he said what he needed to say, âI was raised Catholic, growing up. Before I died and became an agent for DOA, I worked on my family farm helping with the fields and horses while my mom took care of my three-year-old baby sister and eight-year-old baby brother. We were doing well⦠very well, so my father brought in some extra hands to help out. Thatâs when I met Franklin. He was brought in as a blacksmith.â
Eagle sighed as he remembered the man that stole his heart⦠then stole his life.
âGods, the man was beautiful. He had long wavy blond hair and the bluest eyes Iâve ever seen in my life. Because he was a laborer, he had muscles on his muscles. It was love at first sight.â Eagle scoffed, âFor me at least.â
Again, Eagle stopped talking when his heart gave a twinge of pain in remembrance of all that happened⦠because he had trusted⦠believed⦠and gave his heart to a man. âI was a stupid kid and wasnât good at hiding my feelings, and Franklin immediately picked up on it, and it didnât take long before we startedâ¦â Eagle stopped, then after a moment, said, âHe was my first.â
âHow old were you?â TJ asked.
âSixteen,â Eagle answered.
âHow old was he?â TJ asked.
âTwenty-seven,â Eagle
